You know Sophie Turner as Queen of the North in Game of Thrones. It’s time to see her as a criminal mastermind. Joan is one of the shows arriving on The CW in the fall.
The 1980s-set crime drama will air on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the network. There isn’t a premiere date set yet, but that’s not surprising. May is a time for the schedules to be released. Premiere dates tend to be set in late June or in July.
The great news about Joan is that there will be nothing to really stop the premiere in the fall. Even if productions can’t get started for some strange reason this summer, Joan is mostly ready to go.
What is Joan about?
The British series follows Turner as Joan Hannington, a housewife and a mother who holds some rather dangerous secrets. Set in 1980s London, we follow Joan who goes from petty offender to criminal mastermind.
Yes, this is based on a true story. It is adapted from Hannington’s own memoir I Am What I Am: The True Story of Britain’s Most Notorious Jewel Thief. The memoir details Joan’s decisions to go after the jewels despite knowing the risks. All this happens while her daughter is in children’s protective services, and Joan is doing everything she can to get her back.
Joan is also desperate to leave the life that she currently lives. She’s not happily married. She’s married to a violent thug, and when he ends up on the run, it allows Joan to branch out. That’s exactly what she does.
How many episodes are in Joan?
As a British series, I’m sure you can guess that this is going to be shorter than what we’re used to this side of the pond. That streaming model we’ve come to get used to is very much like the British model. Less is more.
There are six episodes in the series. It is a limited series, so expect the full story to be told.
The series doesn’t yet have a premiere date in the UK, although it will come to ITVX. It should arrive before the Stateside premiere, so we’re expecting it sometime in the summer.
