Despite the show following most of the book storyline for Stephen Bonnet's death, some Outlander fans are disappointed in how it played out.

Outlander Season 5 brought us the end of a dastardly character. It was all about ending Ed Speleers’s run as Stephen Bonnet.

The show mostly played out Bonnet’s end the way it happens in the book. He is arrested and sentenced to execution by drowning. Brianna decides to end his life, although in the book, she sails out to do the shooting and it’s when nobody else is around. In the show, she does it from a distance, showing off her excellent shooting skills at the same time.

That change doesn’t affect too much. At least, not for me. Yet, the storyline itself is something that has disappointed a few Outlander fans out there.

Why didn’t Brianna kill Bonnet on the island in Outlander?

One thing fans don’t get is why Brianna didn’t kill Bonnet on the island. She had a chance here and there, so why didn’t she take it?

Others think that the death was just too abrupt. Then there are others who think that Bonnet should have been made to suffer death by drowning. Why would Brianna feel sorry for him enough to shoot him after everything he did?

This all comes down to the way Diana Gabaldon wrote the story. She had Brianna show a little bit of mercy, but it wasn’t just mercy. While Bree did it so that Bonnet wouldn’t die in the way that was his biggest fear, she also did it so that she gained closure. By ensuring he died, she knew that he couldn’t come back after her.

This wasn’t about Bonnet getting a merciful death, but about Brianna gaining closure in this particular storyline. The man who haunted her dreams and who could come after Jemmy was dead and gone for good. He was no longer a threat to her or her family, and she needed that closure.

Why not allow Jamie to do the killing on the island? Why insist that he was taken by the authorities? This could arguably have meant that Jamie’s hands were left clean. Everybody knew that Bonnet was a bad man, and the authorities confirmed that. Then Bree could take matters into her own hands.
