After six seasons, The Crown came to an end at the end of 2023. The final season is heading to DVD and Blu-ray this month, and we will also get the complete series boxset in October. This is a great time to catch up and rewatch the series.
But what do you do when you’re done? There are many other excellent shows out there to watch. Some of them focus on real queens of the past, while others are stories of other real people in history. Here are seven must-watch shows with where to stream them if you love The Crown.
7 shows to watch if you love The Crown
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story
Let us start with a limited series that focuses on Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III. This is the Queen Charlotte from Bridgerton, which means that some of the real history has been adapted for dramatic sake. That doesn’t stop it from being a great story.
The focus is on Charlotte’s love story with George. We see her as she falls in love as a young woman, and we watch how she stands by her husband throughout his madness. It’s easy to have the view that marriages were all about power. They were arranged by parents without the belief that love should matter. However, some of these arranged marriages did lead to love, and this is one of them.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is available to stream on Netflix.
Young Royals
Not all dramas need to be about real people. Some historical fiction is purely fiction and for TV entertainment. That’s the case with Young Royals.
This series follows the fictional Prince Wilhelm of Sweden, wo heads off to boarding school and finds himself falling for his classmate. That classmate happens to be a boy called Simon, which is sure to create a scandal for the Swedish Royal family.
Watch all three seasons of Young Royals on Netflix.
The Last Czars
You know all about the story of the Romanov family. Well, you think you do. The Last Czars gives us another look in this dramatized story. It puts the focus on Czarina Alexnadra Feodorovna, Russia’s last empress, who was related to the British Royal family through her grandmother, Queen Victoria. Czar Nicholas II was also related to King George V, and he even reached out for help with George turning his back to look after his own Royal family at the time.
We see Czar Nicholas II ascend the throne and focus on a path forward for the Russian dynasty with his family. However, as World War I closes in on the end, the Russians revolt leading to the imprisonment and execution of the Czar and his family.
The Last Czars is a limited series and is available on Netflix.
Victoria
Since we mentioned her, we need to include the series about her in this list. Jenna Coleman stars as Queen Victoria in the PBS drama Victoria. We start off with her ascension to the throne at the age of 18, where she needs to figure out what to do about her name and who she will listen to for advice.
Over the course of the three seasons, we see her grow in confidence as queen. There’s also the love story of her and Albert, who we know was her love until her own death in 1901. By the way, Outlander fans, Nell Hudson is in this series!
Victoria is available to stream on PBS Masterpiece.
The Tudors
The story of Henry VIII is told over and over again. There are a lot of tales about his six wives, and The Tudors gives us another look. There are certainly some elements that are completely historically inaccurate, but we’ll let them slide because of the drama.
The series picks up toward the end of Henry and Catherine of Aragon’s marriage. We follow through all wives, the births of his children, the scandals around those in court, and more over the course of four seasons. This is another one for Outlander fans as Maria Doyle Kennedy stars in this series as Catherine of Aragon.
The Tudors is available to stream on Prime Video.
Versailles
How about a trip across to mainland Europe again? This time, we’re heading to 1667 France with Versailles. The series takes a look at 28-year-old King Louis XIV who has finally gained control of France. He decides it’s time to commission the creation of Versailles, which all the nobles want to reside in. Little do they know that Louis is creating it as a way to imprison and control the nobles.
Of course, there’s romance as well. We meet Marie Theresa, the wife of King Louis, and his mistress, who happens to be the sister of the English King. There’s betrayal, war, and much more. It’s another one with an Outlander cast member as Alexander Vlahos is in this series.
Versailles is on Prime Video, Tubi, and The Roku Channel.
The Secrets of British Castles
Would you like something that is much more factual? The Secrets of British Castles is the series to watch, and yes, there is a look at some of those castles that popped up in The Crown.
Dan Jones takes fans on guided tours of some of the most breathtaking castles around Great Britain. He shares how people would have lived, the structural stability of the places, and much more about the history of the locations.
The Secrets of British Castles is available on Netflix.
