Doctor Who is over for another season. We now need to wait for the next part of Fifteen and Ruby’s story. While we wait, we need to turn to other TV shows to get us through the hiatus.
The great news is there are plenty of shows out there that will give you a similar feeling to Doctor Who. Now you just need to decide on whether you want the space aspect, the time travel aspect, or the fantasy aspect of the series.
Here are five shows to watch while waiting for Doctor Who to return.
Timeless
Let’s start with a series that brings in the time travel. Timeless is an amazing series that sees three people go back to different time periods. Their aim is to preserve time, but in the first episode, changes happen that have a huge butterfly effect on the present day.
Can the team fix the change? Will they just need to help prevent changes in the future? Is the bad guy even really the bad guy when you realize what he actually wants to achieve? You’ll find out over the course of two seasons and a made-for-TV movie finale.
Stargate SGI-1
How about some trips to other worlds and universes? Part of what draws us into Doctor Who is that chance to see different planets. Well, Stargate SG-1 offers that as well.
A team travels through a Stargate to get to different planets. While there, they need to figure out what’s going on, who they need to save, and how they can complete their mission. Of course, there are treats to Earth, so the team also needs to forge new alliances to protect their own people.
The Umbrella Academy
Another show with some time travel and fantastical elements involved is The Umbrella Academy. This series is based on graphic novels by Gerard Way, and it gives us a look at a group of estranged siblings who go back to their childhood home after the death of their father.
Their father adopted them. They all have powers, except for one. When one of the siblings returns from a dark and destroyed future, the siblings need to prevent the apocalypse from happening, and that all builds up to where we are before the Season 4 premiere: none of them have powers anymore.
Renegade Nell
Do you want something that is a little more child-friendly like Doctor Who? Well, stick with Disney+. The series Renegade Nell is out and it’s a lot of fun.
It follows Nell, who gains superhuman powers thanks to a fae. She ends up wanted for murder, a crime that she didn’t commit. So she and her sisters end up on the run while they figure out how to prove her innocence. Of course, those who really did it want to find her and kill her before they find a way to prove the truth.
Torchwood
The last one to turn to has to be Torchwood, the Doctor Who spin-off. John Barrowman returns as Captain Jack Harkness, and now he is leading a team for Torchwood.
There are a lot more aliens and supernatural events. The whole point of the team is to protect Earth from any of the alien threats. Torchwood was introduced as a villainous entity in Doctor Who, but that’s mainly because people stand for something a little different to The Doctor. Jack tries to honor The Doctor while going his own way at times.
