In The Scottish Prisoner, we learn a little more about Minnie Grey. Before she was the wife of Hal Grey, she was a spy. And it turns out that she had a connection with Jamie Fraser.
Of course, the more you learn about side characters, the more you want to know. Is there an Outlander book that delves into this character, or are we limited to The Scottish Prisoner and whatever we learn in the main Outlander books?
There is some good news. There’s a short story that offers a backstory to Minnie.
Outlander fans will want to read The Fugitive Green
The Fugitive Green is a short story in the book Seven Stones to Stand and Fall. This book is a collection of short stories by Diana Gabaldon, furthering the story of a few characters. The Fugitive Green gives us more of a backstory on both Minnie and Hal.
The short story is initially set in 1744 Paris. Does that time mean something to you? It should. Jamie Fraser was in Paris around this time. This was as Bonnie Prince Charlie was raising funds and an Army in Paris before heading over to Scotland to start The ’45 a year later.
Minnie does end up back in London, though. This short story tells us more of how Hal and Minnie ended up meeting. We know at the start of The Scottish Prisoner that Hal caught Minnie trying to steal something from his desk. The Fugitive Green tells us why that was, who actually sent her, and what she was trying to achieve.
We also know that Hal spent six months looking for Minnie, and the short story goes into that. It’s the answers we need to understand Hal’s mindset at the time and to see if he really is the diabolical man he initially appears to be in The Scottish Prisoner.
