The cast of Outlander: Blood of My Blood has grown another person. We now know that Tony Curran will take on the role of Lord Lovat, Jamie’s grandfather.

It’s not all that surprising that Lord Lovat will show up. He is Brian Fraser’s father, and Brian’s illegitimacy does come up as one of the reasons Ellen MacKenzie shouldn’t marry Brian. It will be interesting to see how Lord Lovat reacts to Brian’s news that he’s in love with a MacKenzie.

Of course, before you watch the show, you’ll want to know more about the actor taking on the role. Where have you seen Tony Curran before?

Where to see Tony Curran before Outlander: Blood of My Blood

Curran has been on our screens since 1985. He did a lot of guest star work in the likes of The Bill, Soldier Soldier, and Grange Hill. He also played Orlick in the 1999 version of Great Expectations.

There are a few current-day shows and movies that you’ll recognize him from the most, though. One of those is as Vincent Van Gogh in Doctor Who. There’s a beautiful moment where Vincent sees what he will become as an artist, and Curran captures that love and shock so wonderfully.

He played John Knox in the 2013 movie Mary, Queen of Scots, so he certainly has experience bringing real people to life on screen. In fact, you can also see him as Angus Og Macdonald in The Outlaw King, which also includes Steven Cree and some of it was filmed as Doune Castle.

If you really want to see his acting abilities, I recommend watching SEAL Team Season 2. He plays Brett Swann in five episodes, a veteran who is living with a traumatic brain injury that he picked up when he served. However, the failings of the medical system for veterans and the cost of treatment leads to a heartbreaking storyline.

He has one big project coming up that you won’t want to miss. Curran plays King James I of England/James VI of Scotland in Mary & George. This is a limited series coming to STARZ in April, and you will not want to miss it.
