We ended House of the Dragon Season 2 with Aemond Targaryen acting as Prince Regent. However, he was the regent of nothing by the end as Alicent arranged with Rhaenyra for Rhaenyra to take the Iron Throne. What’s next for him in House of the Dragon Season 3?

We can take a look at the book Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin to get an idea of what’s to come. While there have been some changes to the book storylines, we’re likely to see Aemond’s story play out similar to the book. After all, Helaena has shared her prophecy of what will happen to Aemond.

Helaena shares that Aemond is going to die, swallowed up by the Gods Eye. How does it play out in the book?

Aemond heads to Harrenhal in House of the Dragon Season 3

At the end of the second season, we learn that Aemond is heading to Harrenhal. He wants to join Criston Cole and take down Daemon, who is currently raising an army at Harrenhal.

When Aemond gets there, Daemon has already left. Daemon has joined Rhaenyra, who has taken King’s Landing.

Aemond remains in Harrenhal, ordering the deaths of Ser Simon Strong and his family. Alys Rivers is spared, though. She ends up sleeping with Aemond, and she later claims that she and Aemond married and that she is carrying Aemond’s legitimate child. This is something that can’t be confirmed, so it’ll be interesting to see how the TV series handles it.

We know that Aemond has a short fuse and he likes to burn towns. Well, it’s not surprising to learn that he burns multiple Black strongholds in the Riverlands.

Aemond’s death does happen above the Gods Eye

Daemon searches everywhere for Aemond, along with Nettles. Daemon has to go to Harrenhal on Carazes to challenge Aemond to a fight, and Daemon waits 13 days for Aemond to show up. The two end up fighting in the battle that becomes known as the Battle Above the Gods Eye.

The two dragons dual in the air, with Caraxes able to sneak attack Vhagar, locking his teeth into her neck. As the two dragons fell from the sky, Daemon is able to drive Dark Sister into Aemond’s blind eye. Both dragons die as they crash into the lake, and the two men die.

At least, their deaths are presumed. Years after the events, Aemond’s body is found at the bottom of the Gods Eye. Daemon’s body is never recovered, with many believing that he is able to escape death and heads to Essos to be with Nettles and live a quiet life. However, House of the Dragon seems to prophecy that Daemon will die in the same fight.

This is all likely to take place in House of the Dragon Season 3. It makes sense to take out these two players and move the focus onto peace in the intended fourth and final season.
