We know Tony Curran will take on the role of Lord Lovat in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. We’ve already met him in the form of Clive Russell in Outlander Season 2, but now we see an earlier version of the character.
Blood of My Blood is a prequel series. It’s set when Brian and Ellen fell in love, which means it’s all pre-Jamie. It’s also pre-Culloden, although it will be after the 1715 Jacobite uprising. It’s worth taking a look at what we know about Lord Lovat up to that point in the story.
Lord Lovat is Brian’s father in Outlander: Blood of My Blood
While Lord Lovat is a real historical figure, he also has his own story in the Outlander universe. We know from Diana Gabaldon that Simon Fraser is the father of Brian. However, Brian is not a legitimate heir to the Lovat title. He is the son of a maid, called Davina Porter (named after the narrator of the audiobooks). Brian was born in 1691.
There is more to the story as Simon is a dastardly man. He snatched Lady Amelia, the widow of the 10th Lord Lovat, from her bed in the middle of the night. He secured his title of Lord Lovat by forcing her into marriage. However, Lady Amelia’s family were so outraged that they had Simon charged, tried, and sentenced to death, stripping him of his titles after the marriage was annulled. This is loosely based on real history. That’s a lot to go into.
We will likely see Lord Lovat come up because of Brian’s connection to him. The question is whether he’ll be on his son’s side in marrying Ellen, or whether he’ll think his son stupid for the idea. Of course, with how Simon acted to gain a title, he probably thinks highly of his son’s actions. Maybe he thinks the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood is currently in production. It will arrive on STARZ.
