Can Fergus time travel in Outlander? (Breaking down the potential from the books)

The Outlander books have delved deeper into the possibilities and theories of time travel than the series. They've also opened the door to more people in Claire's life who may have the gene.

There are a lot of theories about time travel in the world of Outlander. One thing the show and the books have established is that it’s genetic. So, for Fergus to be able to time travel, it would mean he needs the gene.

Caution: We’re delving into the nine Outlander books for this post, so there may be spoilers.

He may have that genetic ability. It all comes down to the possibility of his father being a certain French aristocrat.

During Written in My Own Heart’s Blood and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, Lord John Grey meets with a man called Percy Wainwright, who also goes by the name Percy Beauchamp. Percy is looking for Fergus, who may or may not be the biological son of Comte St. Germain.

Is Fergus the son of an aristocrat in Outlander?

Percy has a strong argument for Fergus being related to Comte St. Germain. The Comte had a relationship with a certain Amelie Beauchamp. She is Fergus’s mother, although Fergus never really knew her. Remember that Amelie was a woman in a brothel and died when Fergus was young. Fergus was taken in by the women of the brothel.

There is no DNA testing in this time period. Comte St. Germain never acknowledged Fergus, but it is possible that he didn’t know about his potential son. It doesn’t really matter, though. There is a chance that Fergus is his biological son.

This could make Fergus a time traveler

With the knowledge that time travel is genetic, it means that Fergus could be a time traveler. We know from the short story The Space Between that Comte St. Germain is a time traveler. That means if Fergus is his biological son, he would have inherited the gene.

Now it all depends on whether the gene is dormant or active. This is something we’ve seen in Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. Bree and Roger both have the genetic ability and they do time travel. Their first two children, Jem and Mandy, are also able to time travel. However, Mandy has explained that their third child, Davy, appears as water, like Jamie. This suggests that while Davy has the gene, it is a dormant one and he won’t be able to time travel.

So, it is possible that while Fergus has the gene, he doesn’t have the ability to time travel. We have never seen Fergus close enough to any of the portals to find out if he can or not in the books or the show. There is always the chance that it can be written in.
