We will definitely get to see more of Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom in Outlander Season 7B. The promotional photos tell us that. What can we expect for him?

William Ransom currently doesn’t realize that Jamie Fraser is his biological father. How long will it take for him to find out? Does he even learn the truth in the Outlander books? We need to take a look at the storylines to come to find out. And yes, that means book spoilers in this post!

William calls Claire “Mother Claire” in the Outlander books

When Claire Fraser comes back to America, she ends up marrying Lord John Grey. She has to for her own safety, believing that Jamie has died at sea. This leads to Claire becoming a stepmother to William due to this marriage, which is ironic considering she is his stepmother through Jamie! William accepts her and calls her Mother Claire.

We’re sure to see this happen. There are hints that Claire and John will marry, and we know that William is already respectful of Claire Fraser. He’s sure to still call her Mother Claire and show her that respect. I would love to see it play out.

William is sure to find out the truth about Jamie in Outlander Season 7B

William learns about Jamie being his biological father in Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, and we see the fallout of that throughout that book and into Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. How does William find out? Well, it’s when Jamie returns from Scotland and William realizes that they are so similar. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that they are father and son.

To be fair to William, his initial fear is that Jamie raped his mother. Considering Jamie’s position (and being a Jacobite) and Geneva’s place in the house, that’s probably not all that surprising for him to jump to that fear. It would be natural for a man of the time to fear that, and William doesn’t really know Jamie. He’s relieved when he learns that he is not a product of rape.

However, William does head out on a journey to find himself. He needs to figure out if he should still be an Earl. And he ends up resigning his commission and leaving the British Army—although that doesn’t seem to stick.

William ends up with a mission to follow through with in Written in My Own Heart’s Blood

William has to deal with something else coming up, though. While not talking to either Jamie or John, he learns that his cousin Benjamin has been killed in action. At least, that’s the assumption from Captain Richardson.

There is also talk of Ben having a wife and child. So, William heads out to find this mysterious cousin-in-law. We know that Amaranthus Grey will show up in Outlander Season 8. While she shows up at the end of the eighth book, it would be easy to push that part of the story into Season 8 with the Book 9 storyline.

I can certainly see William’s focus on figuring out who he is as he learns the truth about Jamie being the main focus for Outlander Season 7B. He deserves the screen time to show us him figuring this out and going through all of the emotions.
