There is still a lot to come in House of the Dragon Season 3 based on the book storyline. We’re using the book, Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin to get a sense of what’s to come for various characters. One of those is the dragon Syrax.
Syrax is Rhaenyra’s dragon. The two are bonded, and this is important for another character in the story. While Syrax isn’t a war dragon, she knows how to fight to protect herself. Let’s take a look at what could be in store.
Of course, this means spoilers from the book. Just keep in mind that storylines have changed, and this one could be adapted slightly in House of the Dragon Season 3.
Rhaenyra and Syrax get to King’s Landing in House of the Dragon Season 3
With the way things ended in Season 2, there’s no doubt that Rhaenyra is heading for King’s Landing. In the book, we know that she takes the city. The show has already set this up with Alicent promising to open the gates for Rhaenyra.
Syrax doesn’t head to the Dragonpit with the rest of the dragons, but she doesn’t get to fly free either. She is chained to the ground in a stable in the outer ward within the Red Keep. These chains allow her to move from stable to yard, but she can’t take off without a rider.
This is important for later. During the Storming of the Dragonpit, Syrax is outside. Prince Joffrey is able to free her, but it leads to tragedy.
Syrax kills Rhaenyra’s son before dying in Fire & Blood
We have to remember that dragons can only bond with one rider at a time. Other people can’t ride those dragons, and the Targaryens know that well. However, when the Storming of the Dragonpit takes place, Joffrey doesn’t just free Syrax from her chains. He also tries to mount her.
Syrax isn’t happy that Joffrey tries to mount her. Not only is Syrax bonded to Rhaenyra, but Joffrey has his own dragon Tyraxes. So, it’s not that clear why Joffrey decides to attempt to ride Syrax. While she’s in the air, she shrugs Joffrey off and he falls to his death.
Joffrey has been mentioned in House of the Dragon Season 2. He has left Westeros for Pentos with his half-brothers. He could make it back as Rhaenyra takes King’s Landing, but it’s also possible that this storyline is changed and someone else attempts to mount Syrax instead. We do need to see Joffrey’s death at some point, but the way it happens could change.
Back to Syrax, though. She ends up flying to the Dragonpit, potentially in an attempt to save her fellow dragons. She decides to land on the ground and kills the rioters with her claws and teeth.
This sadly leads to the mob overpowering her, and eventually killing her. While there are numerous accounts of how she died, none of them go into detail.
It’s a heartbreaking ending for a loyal dragon. I don’t think I’m ready for this in House of the Dragon Season 3. After all, that’s when I’m sure this storyline is going to play out.
