If you’re in the mood for a story based on true events, Escape from Germany is the one to check out this week. It comes to DVD and Blu-ray on Friday, Sept. 6, and it is already available on Digital.
This is set just before the start of World War II. Set at the end of August 1939, it tells us a harrowing tale that is often overlooked with all the other atrocities that happened during the war. This is one that needs to be told, though, so don’t overlook it.
It is a faith-based movie. Don’t worry about it pushing an agenda in terms of faith. This is more about the escape of a group of men from a country radicalizing its people.
Escape from Germany tells the story of Mormon missionaries
There is a lot of focus on the plight of the Jewish people during World War II. That’s understandably so, but there were so many other people who also suffered or were also at risk. The Mormons were a group of those people.
When the President of the German Mission learned of the Nazis coming into Germany and closing the borders, he knew that he had to get the American missionaries out. This was a dangerous mission, and it took until three days before the invasion of Poland in September 1939 for the full mission to take place.
Why watch Escape from Germany
I understand your apprehension when it comes to faith-based movies. I have that apprehension a lot as well. However, this one is such a beautifully woven tale. It’s more than just the faith. That part is just important to understand the risk to the men.
Instead, the focus is on the time period, and the atrocities that came with that time period. It’s about the risks being taken, the way people could come together for good, the way people would betray others, and so much more.
It’s also important to support independent movies. There are so few that are able to be made, especially to the quality that Escape from Germany is made. It’s these movies that tell us of the lesser-known elements of the past, and we need to keep those stories going.
Escape from Germany is now on Digital and is on DVD and Blu-ray on Friday, Sept. 6.
