Droughtlander suggestions: Read A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers
There are some great books to check out as we continue through Droughtlander. You’ll want to find books that are set in the past or that involve supernatural elements or time travel. A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers is one of those books that covers multiple genres.
First published in 2020, this novel may have been left behind on the lists of TBR, but you’ll want to fix that right now. It’s a great story that covers multiple years as a witch attempts to break a curse for good.
There is even a spot of romance in this book, but not in the way you would initially expect. No, it’s not a Jamie-Claire romance, but it’s a romance that stands the test of time.
What is A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers about?
The novel starts in the year 1895. Juliet LaCompte is a 16-year-old who falls for Auguste Marchant. Only, it turns out that he’s married and their romance is doomed. Part of that is due to Juliet’s mother, a witch who decides to curse Marchant.
The curse goes wrong. Juliet is doomed to follow the artist through time. She has to relive the affair and die tragically young throughout the years. We see her as the silver screen scarlet Nora in the 1930s and then as a struggling musician in the 1970s. Each story ends in tragedy, but is there a chance that she can break the curse in present-day DC?
That’s something Luke Varner hopes. He’s the demon who is tasked with maintaining the curse, but he’s fallen for his charge throughout the decades. As Helen starts to recall the curse and builds on her own powers, she realizes that this may be the end of the botched curse for good.
Why read A Witch in Time during Droughtlander?
We know that Outlander covers multiple genres. Well, that’s what you get with A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers. This isn’t just about a witch. It involves time travel, romance, tragic deaths, and life lessons.
We get to see Juliet’s lives through the eyes of Luke, giving us the male perspective rather than the female one that Outlander starts with. This is a chance to see a demon with heart, who wants to save the woman he loves but isn’t allowed to do it. Instead, he has to experience her deaths over and over again, until she finds a way to break the curse. Is that possible, though? Will they get a happily ever after in the end?
