With all the questions about whether Doctor Who will go on after Season 15, it brought up some questions about the franchise going on. Well, there is still interest in this franchise, with a UNIT spin-off series now in the works.
The BBC and Disney+ are teaming up for the new spin-off. It will feature Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient as Doctor Who characters we’ve already come to know and love. We’ll see Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw also star.
What we know about the Doctor Who UNIT spin-off series
The series is called The War Between The Land and The Sea. It is a five-part spin-off series, which suggests that this is set up as a limited series. Of course, it could just be a five-part story with a sort of anthology element to more UNIT spin-off shows.
The series will see a fearsome and ancient species come to Earth from the ocean. An international crisis is triggered, and UNIT steps in to protect the entire world. The war will be waged on both land and sea.
Russell T. Davies has written the spin-off, with Pete McTighe. The series will feature the Sea Devils, which were first introduced in 1972 and have reappeared since then. They were alluded to in “73 Yards,” and yes, that timeline did become important for Ruby to help The Doctor figure out a way to stop Sutekh.
This is just the latest spin-off in the Doctor Who universe, and it’s one that a lot of fans have waited for. UNIT doesn’t always work with The Doctor. They have their own opinion on how to save the world, but that is their aim: save the world from aliens and outside threats. Now we get to see how they do it without The Doctor always around to step in with his moral compass.
