If you’re in the mood for a story about a damsel who isn’t in distress, Netflix has you covered tomorrow. Damsel arrives on the streamer, and it is not one that you’ll want to skip for International Women’s Day.
Millie Bob Brown stars in this movie that brings a twist to the fairytales. It’s rated PG-13, which suggests that it is for those 13 and older. It can also work for some younger children with parental guidance. I’d say tweens will benefit from it, but it could be a little on the scary side for younger audiences.
Why is Damsel rated PG-13?
Damsel follows a girl who thinks that she is about to get her fairytale ending. She’s marrying into the royal family. Of course, that’s when things take a turn.
On her wedding day, she is thrown into a cavern with a monster. There are names on the sides of the cavern, showing that she isn’t the only girl to have been thrown down there. This royal family has a history of sacrificing girls and women.
We get to see a fight for survival. This damsel is not one in distress. There are some distressing and frightening scenes throughout as this is about a girl surviving against a fire-breathing dragon. What isn’t there to be afraid of there?
There are some bloody scenes, and this gets intense at times. While older viewers will likely be fine with it all, this could be on the scary side for younger viewers. Even some teenagers may not be that comfortable watching it if they don’t like a lot of violence in their movies. There are some dark parts to the story.
That being said, this showcases Millie Bob Brown playing a strong and determined woman. No, she’s not physically strong, but she is mentally strong. She is an inspiration for International Women’s Day.
Damsel is available on Netflix on Friday, March 8.
