With FX opting to bring Shogun back for two more seasons despite the series being billed as a limited series, eyes are on other shows like this. A Gentleman in Moscow is one of those shows. Could we end up with a second season?
A Gentleman in Moscow was billed as a limited series from the beginning. This hasn’t stopped a lot of shows from landing more seasons. Just look at Big Little Lies and the recent Shogun. However, that doesn’t mean everything has to end up with a second season.
A Gentleman in Moscow told the full source material
The series, which wrapped up the story on Friday, May 17, told the full story from the Amor Towles novel. This would mean that the series has to go beyond the source material to keep it going.
This isn’t always a dealbreaker. Big Little Lies and 13 Reasons Why are two examples of stories going ahead of the source material. We will see it with Shogun too, which told the full story of James Clavell’s novel. So, if there is a story there, it is possible that it could be told.
The chances of that happen seem on the slimmer side compared to other shows, though.
There isn’t as much of a call for a second season as with other shows
If we take a look online, A Gentleman in Moscow didn’t get the same type of attention that the likes of Shogun did. It wasn’t compared massively with other big shows, like Game of Thrones, and there hasn’t been this big push from fans to continue the tale.
It also doesn’t sound like showrunner Ben Vanstone or lead actor and EP Ewan McGregor are looking to continue the story for another season. Of course, Shogun was originally planned to continue. It was only a chance meeting that led to the development of a storyline for a second and then third season. So, if the two end up with a nugget that they’d like to explore, the option could be open.
The series didn’t seem to garner as much attention as Shogun, though. Paramount+ is a slightly smaller streamer compared to Hulu (or even HBO and Netflix where Big Little Lies and 13 Reasons Why were). With it not being talked about as much, we’re looking at it being too much of a financial risk to keep going, and Paramount+ won’t want that.
