Outlander season 7B's promotion completely ruined the impact of Jamie's death

Jamie has died at sea. At least, that's what we're being told in Outlander season 7, episode 10. However, the promotion for the season has ruined the impact of the story.

Lord John Grey delivered some devastating news to Claire in Outlander season 7, episode 10. However, the impact could have been greater had it not been for the Outlander season 7B promotion.

As you watched Lord John Grey tell Claire about Jamie being killed at sea, there was no doubt there was a lump in your throat. You may have even started to believe it for a second. Caitriona Balfe did an excellent job in showing her grief through the clips, and the show was wonderful in making us believe that it was the end for their story.

But there is something that would easily take you out of the impact of the episode. It all goes back to the promotional material released ahead of Outlander season 7B.

We know Jamie has to survive in Outlander season 7B

Whether you’re a book reader or not, it’s very clear that Jamie Fraser is going to live. There’s a lot going against the idea of the show killing the main character. For one, this is not Game of Thrones, so it’s not a case of “anything can happen.”

The Outlander promotion lets down the show’s impact in this episode, though. You see, we know that Jamie Fraser is part of Outlander season 8. Sam Heughan was all over social media. We’ve seen him in costume, both in leaked photos and official footage or shared social media posts. Plus, Heughan has spoken about season 8 and what it was like filming the final season.

Then there’s the promotion that shows Jamie in a blue coat. We know that Jamie has to make it back to America, and we know that he will join George Washington’s army to fight for independence. There are even stills from episodes that we haven’t seen yet, showing us that Jamie makes his way back to Claire.

It’s disappointing in a way. I remember reading the book for the first time and having a lump in my throat. I had no idea if Jamie was going to survive or whether he’d actually been killed or not at first. That shock had me invested in the book a little more, and it had me fully believing in Claire’s grief.

Will Jamie make it back before Claire marries Lord John Grey?

Okay, there is one thing that we do have to wonder, though. We know that Jamie will make it back to America, but will it be before Lord John Grey and Claire marry?

They only have 24 hours. That’s all the time Captain Richardson gave Lord John Grey to avoid embarrassment as he arrested Claire. John made it clear that Claire had to get dressed immediately and marry him. Is that enough time for Jamie to make himself known? Can he do the dramatic “I object” line? Now that would be something fun to see!

Outlander airs on Fridays on STARZ.
