With the way Doctor Who ended last week, there’s no doubt that you want more of the story. This is where we have a lot of bad news, though.
There isn’t a new episode of Doctor Who on tonight, Saturday, June 7. You won’t catch it on the BBC in the UK or on Disney+ around the world. There is a long wait for new episodes, and that’s if they happen at all.
Why isn’t there a new episode of Doctor Who on tonight?
The lack of new episode tonight is because the previous episode was the Doctor Who season 15 finale. That’s why it felt so big, and it’s why that twist at the end happened. Fifteen is out, and The Doctor has a new face. It doesn’t look like this change was initially planned, but it does set up for some exciting storylines and questions as the show returns.
There is just a long wait now. We’re used to long waits, though, right? After all, we usually have to wait until Christmas Day for the special. Well, this is where there is some bad news.
Doctor Who’s future isn’t confirmed just yet
BBC and Disney haven’t confirmed if there will be a new season of Doctor Who. While Ncuti Gatwa once said to the live audience of the Graham Norton Show that a new season would film in 2025, that was cut from the broadcast. Now it looks like plans have changed, and BBC and Disney were both waiting until after season 15 aired to make a decision.
Because of that, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll get a Christmas Day special this year, and that hurts. At least in the past we’ve had New Year’s Day specials to look forward to. Having no special at all over the holiday season is going to feel weird.
While Doctor Who season 16 hasn’t been confirmed yet, there’s no reason to think that there won’t be a season at all. Disney has ordered 26 episodes, and half of them had to air. Well, we’re onto 16 episodes, so while half of the total has aired, it does mean that there could be another 10 episodes to come at least.
There’s a Doctor Who spinoff on the way
If you love UNIT, you’ll be happy to hear that there is a spinoff on the way. The War Between the Land and the Sea has a teaser trailer, and we’re ready to see what that story will entail. This is a miniseries, but it shows that the universe as a whole is something the BBC and Disney are still interested in.
It also makes sense why a decision on Doctor Who season 16 is delayed. The focus will have been on this miniseries first.
