3 most likely people trying to kill Brian Fraser in Outlander: Blood of My Blood (and 1 it's definitely not)

MacKenzies, Grants, and more could want Brian Fraser dead.

From the beginning of Outlander: Blood of My Blood, it’s like people have wanted Brian Fraser’s head on a pike. Now someone is close to killing him.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 9.

A lot of secrets came out in the penultimate episode of Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1. One of the secrets was the love that Ellen MacKenzie has for Brian Fraser. This completely threatens Clan MacKenzie, as it threatens Ellen’s marriage to Malcolm Grant.

Yet, Colum promised that if Ellen walked away from Brian, he would ensure Brian wasn’t harmed. That didn’t last long, as Brian found himself with assassins after him at the end of Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 9. The question is whether Colum has sent them or not.

Here are the three most likely people to send the assassins, and the one that it’s likely not to be.

Colum MacKenzie

While Colum made a promise not to harm Brian, we know that he has routinely put the clan before his sister. He wants to ensure the clan’s survival, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it shouldn’t come at the expense of an innocent life. And Brian is pretty innocent in all of this, except for falling in love with Ellen MacKenzie.

The question is whether Colum would break his word. When we meet Colum in Outlander, he tends to keep his word for the most part. That is except for helping Claire get to Inverness when she becomes useful, but it’s not like a huge deal was struck between the two of them.

For Colum to break his word, it would mean Ellen is freed from her own promise. This could threaten to destroy Clan MacKenzie. Isn’t Colum smart enough to realize that?

Dougal MacKenzie

While Colum has made a promise, Dougal wasn’t there for it. What if he ended up putting a hit out on Brian before hearing of what Colum had promised? That would still create problems for Clan MacKenzie, but it wouldn’t be as devastating for Ellen. After all, she pretty much knows what Dougal thinks of the entire situation.

I wouldn’t put it past Dougal to decide to put the hit out. After all, he hates the Frasers. He doesn’t even need to know who Brian is as a person. The man is a Fraser, and that’s it.

On top of that, Dougal acts first and then looks for reparations afterward. He is rash, and we’ve already seen it in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. He wouldn’t consider the consequences of his actions.

Malcolm Grant

No, not the Malcolm who Ellen is betrothed to. The uncle who is also called Malcolm Grant. This Malcolm is certainly one who is out for blood when it comes to anyone going up against Clan Grant, and he has already threatened Ellen once.

While we didn’t see the Grants learn about Ellen and Brian, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Uncle Malcolm found out something. He would have had spies at the tynchal, so it would make sense for word to get to him that Brian and Ellen shared glances.

Rather than kill Ellen and destroy the two clans joining together, he would go after Brian. He’s not beholden to anything Colum promises Ellen, and it’s not like many people would probably care that he did it.

There 1 person who hasn’t ordered it in Outlander: Blood of My Blood

As much as Simon Fraser is angry with his son right now, there is not a chance that he would actually put out a hit on Brian. It just doesn’t make sense for him to do it, especially when he could end up needing Brian in the future.

Simon is a man who tries to look at things from all angles. He tries to predict how people will turn against him, and while he doesn’t always get it right, he knows that he needs Brian by his side despite hating him at times.

So, I’m pretty settled that Simon hasn’t ordered this. He’ll know that a relationship with Ellen could end up helping him tear down the MacKenzies, and part of him will want that to happen.
