In some exciting news, HBO has confirmed the season for House of the Dragon season 3 to premiere. However, Matt Smith seems to have leaked the release month.
Outlander fans know what it’s like for an actor to reveal a release month (but then get it wrong). And to be honest, Matt Smith is also no stranger to revealing a release date. He did the same with House of the Dragon season 2! Maybe someone shouldn’t tell him anything, but then we wouldn’t get some exciting updates.

Matt Smith reveals House of the Dragon season 3 release month
While talking with This Morning in the UK about The Death of Bunny Munro, he also brought up some of the other shows and movies that he’s working on. One of those is House of the Dragon, where he plays Daemon Targaryen. At the end of the second season, Daemon finally decided that he needed to support Rhaenyra’s claim to the Iron Throne instead of separating Team Black for his own gains.
Well, Smith revealed that House of the Dragon season 3 is set to premiere in August 2026. This hasn’t been confirmed by HBO or Warner Bros., though. Instead, HBO made it clear that House of the Dragon season 3 would arrive in summer 2026, which is something that we’d already expected based on the release of the previous two seasons.
HBO did release a sizzle reel of shows coming in 2026. There are a couple of clips from House of the Dragon, but nothing that gives anything away about the storylines, except a look at James Norton as Ormund Hightower.
House of the Dragon season 3’s release matches the first season
If August is right, it will match the release of the first season. That was timed at the end of August, getting the episodes in before the start of fall TV on broadcast networks. It was also just ahead of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video, which follows a two-year release pattern like the Game of Thrones prequel series.
The second season was released in June 2024, so we had hoped for another early summer release. However, we’ll take any time in the summer, as this is usually when we’re struggling to find something to watch, as all the broadcast channels are on a break!
Smith did say “I think,” though. So, while he may have been told a rough date, it’s possibly not the exact release month. We’ll need to wait for official confirmation.
House of the Dragon is available to stream on HBO Max.
