Leighton Meester did not disappoint when it came to her grand debut in The Buccaneers season 2 premiere. She brought intrigue and scandal, but she also brought understanding and empathy.
Caution: There are SPOILERS for The Buccaneers season 2, episodes 1 & 2 in this post.
The Buccaneers season 2 certainly kicked off the drama in good fashion. For Nan, it’s not just about her parents divorcing. We also learned that her biological mother isn’t Patti. Instead, Patti is her aunt, with Nell, played by Leighton Meester, actually being her biological mother.
Nell has turned up hoping to be able to reveal the truth to Nan, but it’s not quite the right time. However, Nan seems to have figured something out, and we’re sure to see more drama. The question is whether that will happen this season, or if we’ll have to wait for The Buccaneers season 3.

There’s too much with Nell for Leighton Meester not to return in The Buccaneers season 2
If Meester was only going to be in the first episode, then the show has done us a disservice. There is far too much juicy drama going on in this family, and we need to see more of it play out on screen. While she didn’t return in episode 2 and it doesn’t look like she’ll be around in episode 3, there is plenty of time in the season for Meester to be back in the future.
It doesn’t make sense to leave Meester’s character out of the rest of The Buccaneers season 2. There’s no guarantee of getting a third season, so to save all of this family drama for a potential third season means the show is badly planned. The risk of leaving fans hanging is too high, so we’d need some sort of closure this season.
This could be in the second half of the season, and it will depend on other storylines. The benefit of Nan still being at the center of many plots is that it opens the door for her to turn to her family for support and help.

Nan learning the truth is important in The Buccaneers season 2
Nan has already worked something out, when she asked how long it had been for Patti and Nell to reconnect. As soon as she heard 19 years, she knew that it had something to do with her. Maybe she doesn’t realize that Nell is her biological mother, but she knows that it has something to do with her birth.
It would be interesting to see how she deals with this news in The Buccaneers season 2, especially with everything else going on. She sacrificed her love for Guy to gain security for her sister, Jinny. However, Theo has clearly worked out that Guy was with Nan the night before their wedding, which is sure to have disastrous consequences. Could Nell and Patti come to Nan’s aide in handling the issues with secrets coming out, leading to more secrets coming out?
