It's disappointing news for Peacock's rom-com series Laid

If you were hoping for another season of Laid, there's some terrible news.

The curse isn’t just for Ruby in Laid; it’s for the series itself. The series has been canceled after one season by Peacock.

In a way, the news isn’t that surprising with how long it’s been since the series debuted. However, it is disappointing considering how fun the series was and the cliffhanger that we have now been left on. This should be a lesson for shows not to leave major cliffhangers because of the high risk of cancellation.

Laid canceled after one season by Peacock

TVLine shared the disappointing news about the Stephanie Hsu series. Ruby will not get to learn more about the curse that seems to be a genetic one, and now we’ll be left to find out if any more of her exes are at the risk of death.

Peacock hasn’t given an official reason for the cancellation, but we can likely guess what it is. It’s all linked to the cost of production versus the viewership figures. It’s likely that the show didn’t get enough subscribers watching to justify a second season, and once again, I will put the blame on the streaming platform.

For one, it was released as a binge-watch, and I just don’t think that’s a good model anymore. People are losing interest quickly, and if you don’t watch in the first week, your views are pretty much pointless for the streamers.

Secondly, the series wasn’t heavily publicized. A streaming show needs a huge promotional push, but the streaming networks seem to have an issue with that. It’s not just a Peacock issue. I’m seeing it with Prime Video and Netflix as well. People aren’t giving first seasons a chance because there are so many just canceled.

There is an Australian version of Laid

If you do want more Laid but you don’t want to rewatch this one-season comedy, then you’ll want to turn to the Australian series of the same name. The 2011 rom-com ran for two seasons, although they were just six episodes each, and told a very similar story.

Roo McVie is the Australian version of Ruby, who needs to figure out why her ex-lovers are dying in mysterious circumstances. The second season saw a twist, where there was someone who had the opposite curse of Roo, where he was able to cure anyone he slept with. However, it’s worth noting that the series did end with a bit of a cliffhanger, but more of a type of cliffhanger that makes it clear that some curses can’t be beaten.

Laid is available to stream on Peacock.
