Outlander seems to be setting the seeds to make Frances Claire and Jamie’s granddaughter. However, is it possible that her and Jane’s mom was just another time traveler?
The Outlander season 7 finale ended with Frances singing a song that was written in 1907 and made popular in 1909. There is no way that Frances should have known this, and yet, she claims her mom taught her it. Well, that has set off the theories that Faith was alive at some point, and even Claire is starting to believe it.
The theory itself comes from the books. While never explicitly stated, Claire does briefly wonder if Jane and Frances’s Faith is her Faith. She pushes the thoughts aside, though, but there are still fans that believe this theory could be plausible.
What if Jane and Frances’s mom was a time traveler in Outlander?
There is another explanation, though. Rather than Faith being the stillborn daughter of Claire and Jamie, it’s possible that this Faith is just another time traveler. All it takes is someone coming through the stones from 1909 (let’s say that since that’s when the song was made popular) or later. They would know the song, and they could end up singing it to their children.
It’s not like Claire hasn’t used a song from her time in the past. It was a great way for Murtagh to announce his arrival in Outlander season 4 because of the connection between Murtagh and Claire in the search for Jamie back in season 1.
In the books, other songs are used for time travelers to end up connecting. Wendigo Donner uses “Yellow Submarine” for Brianna to realize that he is from the future. We also know in the TV series that Brianna and Roger have sang songs from their own time.
With the knowledge that there are other time travelers out there, it is plausible that Jane and Frances’s mom was just another time traveler.
This doesn’t explain why Master Raymond wants Claire’s forgiveness, though. Of course, that could be linked to something else entirely, but it does seem like it’s all connected to Frances coming into Claire and Jamie’s life.
We’ll need to wait until Outlander season 8 to get the details, which we at claireandjamie.com aren't expecting until 2026. It could even be one of those things that is never fully explained due to time and even due to Claire never really getting the answers she needs—she would need Master Raymond to show back up for that!
