As Christmas rolled in, STARZ released another teaser for Outlander season 8. While some of the scenes were the same as the first teaser, there were a few standout moments that tell us about things to come. One of those is that “James Fraser will die in” the war that’s coming.

Is it really possible that Jamie will die in the Revolutionary War? Is that what we’ve been building up to throughout the eight seasons of Outlander? It’s hard to imagine it, but if it is written in a textbook, then it must be, right?

Jamie Fraser has Frank Randall’s book in the Outlander season 8 teaser trailer

We saw a short clip of Jamie going to speak with Brianna with a book in his hand during the earlier tease, as we’ve looked at here at claireandjamie.com, and those who have read Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone would know exactly what that book was. It was the one written by Frank Randall, as he delved into the Revolutionary War. Now we get to learn a little more of what the book says.

Sure enough, war is coming to the backcountry. Nobody could really escape the Revolutionary War, even if they wanted to, and the teaser trailer proves it. Frank writes about that war, and he says that “James Fraser will die in it.”

It’s something Jamie and Claire have feared for a long time. Each time they go into battle, there are worries that one of them won’t make it out alive — mostly Jamie since he’s the one fighting. On Outlander season 7, Claire was hit with a bullet that did almost cost her her life, and that’s something that will be on Jamie’s mind from now on.

Yet, it’s back to being scared for Jamie. And based on the tears from both Jamie and Claire, they believe Frank’s words.

Could Frank have lied about Jamie dying on Outlander?

Of course, there are going to be questions about whether Frank could have lied. He was a renowned historian, though, and that means he wouldn’t have risked his career. There is not a chance he would have written something in a textbook that could have been proven otherwise. It all had to come from a source.

So, what’s the source? That is my biggest question, but we may never know. Frank wrote this book in secret when he told Claire not to search for Jamie at all. While Claire didn’t, Frank did, and this book was the last for him to write before his death. It’s clear that Frank knew a lot more than he ever let on, and that’s more than the fact that Jamie dies.

There is hope that Frank is wrong. James Fraser was a popular name, so it could have been another James. On top of that, it’s possible that it seemed like James Fraser had died but had been saved back at home. If you’ve read Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, then you’ll know that there is a way to save Jamie, but the show hasn’t really delved into this element as it’s all to do with Claire’s powers. Could that change in the final season?

For now, it has us worried for Jamie and Clare as we prepare for Outlander season 8 on STARZ, premiering on Friday, March 6.
