Things continue to be difficult for the two families on It’s Not Like That season 1 episode 2, especially when it comes to David and his current living situation. It’s adding to the confusion for the children, and it’s time to change that.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from It’s Not Like That season 1 episode 2

The episode starts in the past, as we get to see the two families having Sunday lunch together. David was a part of the family as well, so it’s hard now to see the two families broken in a way. It’s not just Jenny missing from the table, but also David.

However, he does turn up to talk about the schedule. He would like to spend more time with the children after school, and considering David was the one to leave Lori, it doesn’t make sense that after six months, he’s still living at a hotel. Lori notes that this is confusing for the kids, thinking that it’s all temporary, and she makes it clear that he needs his own place.

Merritt just wants to make his dad mad on It’s Not Like That season 1 episode 2

When picking up the kids from school, David decides to ask Merritt about quitting wrestling. He also asks about something else that Merritt can do, such as basketball or another sport. It all comes down to sport, and Merritt doesn’t want to discuss this. As he sees Flora walking home, Merritt decides to jump out of the car and walk with her.

Flora is supposed to be going to therapy, but she decides to skip it. The two teenagers are having a lot of fun together, and they’re able to be open and honest with each other. Merritt makes it clear that he just wants to find something that will annoy his dad, because he’s angry at the whole situation. (He ends up finding the drums!)

This does come back on Flora, though, as Malcolm makes it clear that she can’t just skip therapy. This isn’t something she’s been doing just since Jenny died, but an ongoing thing for the last three years. She cut herself, and now she needs to be in therapy for it. At least, that’s what her parents believed. Flora finally opens up to Merritt about what she did, continuing to show their bond forming.

Flora also gets a bit of an epiphany, as her English teacher hands out pens that he has had custom-created. He wants them to do their writing by hand, and their essay is about something important to her. Flora decides that she should probably write about that, and even her dad is happy to see her writing. This is a chance to explore that side of her once more.

Casey deals with more of the bullying

Meanwhile, Casey needs to deal with the girls from the cheerleading squad. When Pen says that she is going to meet Dakota and other girls for food, Lori and Malcolm suggest that Casey go with them. It’s not what either of them really want, but they decide to go through with it.

However, Casey is dealing with other issues. Trevor, on the wrestling team, teases Casey, saying that she only joined because she likes him. That’s got to Dakota, who spreads it around and teases Casey when there are a group of boys, saying that Casey could teach them how to pin them.

Casey rushes off, going home and immediately calling her mom. One thing she realizes is that her friendship with Penelope is dead, and she needs to move on. She also realizes that she does need to stand up against Trevor, but will she be able to put him in his place?

Lori goes on her first date with CuppaJoe on It’s Not Like That

At first, Lori isn’t sure about going on a date with CuppaJoe, on It's Not Like That season 1 episode 2. She’s hung up on the kiss and what it means for her and their families. She decides to tell Malcolm that the kiss shouldn’t have happened and that it can’t happen again. She was best friends with Jenny, and this would be wrong.

This gives her the freedom to feel like she can go on a date with Joe, and the date goes well. He even sends her a goodnight text before the date is over to say how well it went, helping to ease some of the nervousness on the date.

However, things take a turn when Lori has to end the night early. It’s not ending the night early that’s a problem, but she doesn’t kiss him. It’s clear that this is going to be a problem moving forward.

Meanwhile, Malcolm is also struggling with moving forward, and he tells friends, who are leaders of other religious places in the city, about him and Lori. While they’re happy that he is looking to move on, they share that he should probably avoid doing that with someone in his own church.

While that may be true, Malcolm decides to tell Lori that he hasn’t felt so alive in years, and the kiss ignited that. It’s not that he wants things to change, but he does want to make sure that Lori knows that. While this was supposed to be said in confidence, we end the episode finding out that Merritt overheard the entire thing. How will he cope after this?

It’s Not Like That airs on Sundays on Wonder Project on Prime Video.
