Call the Midwife is back for another season. Can you believe we’re onto season 14 of this period drama? Now we’re looking at the episode length to see how long we get with the nuns and staff of Nonnatus House.
British shows tend to have shorter seasons than U.S. shows. I think growing up in Britain with the shorter season orders is the reason why I don’t mind streaming season lengths. I love 22-episode seasons for shows that have more of a case or monster of the week format, but I much prefer shorter seasons for the consistency in storylines.
Call the Midwife season 14 episode count
The length of the season is the same as previous seasons. We’ll get eight episodes in Call the Midwife season 14. This is plenty of time to focus on individual cases in each episode while developing the main cast relationships and storylines. There isn’t too much time to create many side stories that end up going nowhere, though, which I like.
Don’t forget there is also the Christmas special. That aired at Christmas 2024, and you can watch it on PBS Masterpiece. It is technically part of Call the Midwife season 14, but it’s not one of the eight episodes of the season. It takes place in 1969, so make sure you watch it before the new season arrives if you missed it.
What to expect in Call the Midwife season 14
The new season picks up in 1970. It’s a new decade for Nonnatus House, and that means new troubles and problems. It also means some exciting times for the women that the nuns and staff will treat in the next few years to come.
There is a new postulant who will join Nonnatus House during the middle of the season. This is a great chance to see how Nonnatus House continues its attempts to grow in a time when it’s hard to get new recruits. There are chapters closing around the country, and this could be the way the series eventually comes to an end—although, I hope that isn’t any time soon!
Call the Midwife season 14 premieres on Sunday, March 30 at 8/7c on PBS.
