There has been some exciting news about the future of House of the Dragon. Just as we expected, the fourth season is happening. HBO has now officially greenlit the season, as well as confirming the release year it will arrive.

This news isn’t that surprising, when there was already talk of House of the Dragon season 4. Showrunner Ryan Condal had already shared that he was planning on creating a fourth season, and that the fourth season would be the last. There may be a change to that plan now.

House of the Dragon season 4 has a release year

Deadline reports that while at a press conference, HBO CEO Casey Bloys shared the exciting news for the Game of Thrones fandom. The fourth season is officially happening, with the news coming out well ahead of the season 3 premiere. However, don’t expect this early renewal to speed up the process of getting new seasons.

House of the Dragon season 4 will arrive in 2028. Yes, that’s how far ahead into the future Bloys is planning. The writing work on the season has started, and while Condal originally said that he was planning on the fourth season being the last, that may no longer be the case.

It is a long wait for a new season of the series, but having a release year already certainly helps settle expectations. At the same time, the release year makes sense and follows the schedule that has already been set up by the series. House of the Dragon debuted in 2022, with the second season premiering in 2024. We have to wait until 2026 for season 3, so it only makes sense that season 4 will arrive in 2028!

House of the Dragon season 3 is set to be released in summer 2026

It also looks like HBO is happy with bringing the Game of Thrones prequel series in the summer months. The first season arrived in August 2022, with the second season getting a June 2024 release date. Well, it looks like House of the Dragon season 3 will arrive sometime in the summer of 2026.

Back in September, HBO confirmed that the release would be “early summer,” which likely means a June release date. The bad news is that it means the series will be out of the Emmy 2026 contention period, but it can go up against shows for the 2027 period.

We have to wait until 2026 for all the Game of Thrones shows, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms now premiering sometime that year instead of 2025 as originally planned. However, the good news is that that series has been renewed for season 2, and that is slated to arrive in 2027 to hopefully break up the wait for a Game of Thrones prequel series.

House of the Dragon is available to stream on HBO Max, along with all eight seasons of Game of Thrones.
