As Geillis Duncan opened the door at the end of Outlander season 7, episode 9, Roger immediately recognized her. However, in Outlander season 7, episode 10, Geillis didn’t know who he was. Is this a blooper? It’s actually relatively easy to explain.
During the episode, Geillis asked Roger if she knew him. He felt familiar to her, but then, so did Buck. Roger pointed this out, saying that Geillis said she thought she knew his “cousin.” The truth is, Geillis should have recognized Roger, but there are some understandable reasons why she may not remember.
Geillis only met Roger in passing in Outlander season 2
Geillis and Roger met in the Outlander season 2 finale. Roger and Bree were having a drink in a pub when Geillis passed them. Bree had already met her at a White Rose of Scotland meeting, but she only really took a quick glance at Roger.
There’s no way that Geillis would have really taken in Roger’s features at this point. She wouldn’t have listened to his name, because she didn’t care. She wanted to rally people to her cause, and she had other plans on her mind. She was getting ready to travel through the stones.
She did see him briefly at the stones. However, it was dark and there was the burning body of her husband next to her. She wasn’t going to stop and say hi to anyone, rushing through the stones in the hope of achieving her goal of putting a Jacobite king on the throne.
With all this in mind, it’s not surprising that Geillis doesn’t remember Roger. The benefit for Roger is that he had time to do some research into her. He found out that she was his direct ancestor, and he needed to know as much as he could find out about her. He was putting together the book for time travelers to help Jemmy, Mandy, and any children they have. Roger wants his children to be ready.
How long ago was 1968 for Geillis in Outlander season 7?
It has been 12 years since Roger met Geillis. During the episode, he notes that it’s not been as long for Geillis, but he doesn’t know exactly how long.
To be honest; we don’t know how long it’s been, either. In the books, we find out that she arrived sometime after 1733, but there isn’t an exact date given. With that in mind, we can assume that it’s been six years for Geillis. That’s long enough for her memory of Roger to get hazy.
Sure, he’d look familiar, but he does have one of those faces. While Geillis has met Roger before, it’s easy to understand why she wouldn’t fully recognize him. She does feel something familiar about him, but that could also be the time travel element or just the fact that they’re family.
