Things aren’t looking good for Dunk when it comes to his journey to prove himself as a knight on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, it’s got nothing to do with the tourney, and everything to do with trouble he gets himself into.
At the end of the series premiere for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO released a promo to give us a look at what’s to come during the season. This is normal for a show, and we’ll get individual promos from the third week to see what’s to come each week. What we do get to see is that Dunk finds himself in the middle of a literal fight for his life — a trial by combat.
Dunk is an honorable man on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
While he’s preparing to get ready for the tourney, an incident happens one night. The girl that he’s falling for from the traveling performers is grabbed by the Targaryen prince. Egg shouts “he’s hurting her,” and Dunk can’t help himself. He rushes through the crowd and punches the Targaryen in the fact.
It’s not a good idea to attack the king’s grandson, as Baelor points out, and there is no other option at that point. Dunk has to take part in a trial by combat.
This would usually mean Dunk and the prince would fight, but it looks like this trial is going to be bigger. For those who know the books, you’ll know that it is on a grander scale compared to the trial by combats we’ve seen in the past. In a way, this is a good thing for Dunk, but is there a way to get through this and still get the dream of being a knight for the Targaryens?

Egg has a dream of his own
While Dunk has a dream of becoming a knight, Egg has his own dream. He would like to stay on as Dunk’s squire, although we can see that he has about as much training in that as Dunk has in being a knight.
There are plenty of questions about who Egg really is. He shared that his mother has died, and he is far too well spoken to be some kid of an innkeeper or some stable boy. In fact, he doesn’t seem to know horses all that well, but he is a good kid.
Again, those who have read the books will know, but we don’t get to find out just yet. With six episodes in the season, though, it will only be a matter of time, especially once the trial by combat starts.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs on Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.
