Dolly and Jerry need their own Outlander spinoff next

There is room for the Outlander universe to grow with spinoff stories. A Dolly and Jerry story is an absolute must.

As I come to the end of A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows, I realize just how important an Outlander spinoff focused on Dolly and Jerry MacKenzie is. They tell another love story, but this one has a much more bittersweet ending than many of the others.

Sure, we know that Ellen Fraser died young, and we know that both of Claire’s parents were killed in a car accident when she was just five. However, Dolly and Jerry’s story is one that sees them separated by time. Just as they manage to find their way back to each other, they are pulled from one another again. And yet, this entire story is needed to save young Roger MacKenzie’s life.

A bittersweet love story involving time travel in Outlander

Outlander: Blood of My Blood will feature the standing stones, but there’s no guarantee that it will include time travel. After all, Ellen and Brian can’t travel, and there is nothing to say that Henry and Julia managed to travel through the stones. Diana Gabaldon keeps saying that while one of them had the time travel gene, neither of them went through any time portals.

Yet, many Outlander fans want a story that involves time travel in this universe. Jerry and Dolly’s story includes that, as we get to see Jerry travel through the stones. In fact, it connects back to a main Outlander story, as Roger and Buck come across Jerry and get him back to his own time. There’s even a look at how time travel works, and that all events have already happened and so have to happen again.

On top of that, we still have the love story in A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows. All Jerry wants to do is to get back to his wife and son. As for Dolly, she doesn’t move on from Jerry, who is presumed killed in action despite initially being declared missing. His plane is found, but Jerry is not.

It’s clear that Jerry and Dolly have a more unconventional love story for the time period they’re in. They eloped, and Jerry only met his mother-in-law after they got married. They were clearly smitten with each other to do this, and yet, just as they find their way back to each other, life rips them from each other again.

This starts a story for Frank Randall in Outlander

As well as a bittersweet love story, there are a few familiar characters. One of those is Frank Randall, who comes to Jerry with a top secret mission. We know that later Frank starts looking into the standing stones and time travel, but he knows nothing about it at this point. At least, that’s what we’re led to believe. Seeing Frank start to suspect something could be a great way to open up a Frank spinoff series.

Then there’s the mention of a character who shares the same name as Le Comte St. Germain. We know in A Space Between, he and Master Raymond walk through the portal to another time. It looks like he lands in World War II at some point, and this could open up an Outlander spinoff focused on him as we learn he definitely didn’t die in Outlander season 2.

If the world of Outlander is going to expand, it makes sense with a series of limited series. One about Dolly and Jerry is a must.

Outlander is available to stream on STARZ.
