As Outlander approaches the end of its 12-year run, author Diana Gabaldon doesn’t see this moment as a true conclusion. While Claire and Jamie Fraser’s story might end with eight seasons, the 10-book series is far from over.
For Gabaldon, the difference between the books and the TV show remains essential. She has often stated that “the TV show is the TV show, and the books are the books,” meaning that the show has been (and will be) following its own path, partially diverging from its literary source. The show might be drawing the curtains on television, but in the written world the Outlander story is still very much alive.
Despite the divergence, Gabaldon has always remained actively involved in the show’s production. Over the years, she has worked as a consultant and contributed scripts to several episodes, including “Vengeance Is Mine,” “Journeycake,” and “Ye Dinna Get Used to It.” She is also set to write the ninth episode of season 8.
When it comes to the show’s conclusion, Gabaldon expresses genuine satisfaction. “I think it’s an effective and satisfying ending,” she told TV Insider, adding that she is “beyond pleased that people have enjoyed the show so much all these years.”
At the same time, she acknowledges the personal shift that comes with the production ending, admitting she will miss the behind-the-scenes, though she notes it will allow her to focus more on writing.
Season 8 will draw heavily from Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, and one storyline she was particularly excited to see adapted involves the Cunningham family. Gabaldon shared her enthusiasm, saying, “I adore old Mrs. Cunningham,” and praising how faithfully the show brought her to life.

Diana Gabaldon speaks on Outlander book 10, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out
Looking ahead, the tenth book of the series, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, is still in the works. When asked whether any of its material will appear in the final season, she simply answered: “Nope.” She later reassured fans, saying, “The show isn’t touching any of Book 10 — so y’all will still have more Outlander.”
She also clarified the meaning behind the book’s title, explaining that “a warrior going out” refers to someone heading into battle, not necessarily dying. Beyond Jamie and Claire, Gabaldon continues expanding the universe through other characters.
Gabaldon revealed she is working on additional projects, including a new Lord John novel focused on his time in British Intelligence, titled The Black Chamber.
Gabaldon remains discreet about the details of the finale. However, she did share her reaction to the final script, saying she wrote in the margins, “This is great! Really like it,” before teasing with a playful wink: “Lucky for the actor that you’re not showing what really happened to [this historical character].”
Yes, Diana, we are intrigued! We will tune in this Friday for a new episode of Outlander.
