The ending to Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 9 broke us all. Ellen broken Brian’s heart, but is it possible that he will see through it all?
Granted, Brian has other things to focus on right now. The end of the episode saw assassins come after him, and there are plenty of theories about who has sent those assassins. He’ll want to get through that before he starts thinking about the words Ellen said to him.
Brian knows the position Ellen was in during Outlander: Blood of My Blood
Brian is a man of the time, and he knows how the world works. Something that he told Julia was that he is a penniless man, which makes him not the best option as a husband. Of course, Ellen was able to look past that, but in the end, she is a MacKenzie lady, and Brian would have known that duty could have come calling.
Women like Ellen don’t get to marry for love. They have to break away from their families to do that in some cases, and Ellen wouldn’t want to do that right now. So, while she broke his heart with the things she said, it’s likely that Brian knows that this is something Ellen had to do and not something that she wanted to do.
It’s not like Brian has even suggested that they run away from their families. It’s like he knows that isn’t necessarily an option. It will become an option, as we know from the Outlander story, but it’s not necessarily one right now.
Brian likely saw that Ellen didn’t mean her words
Ellen said some awful things to Brian, about how she couldn’t marry an illegitimate man or a penniless one for that matter. It could be hard for Brian to get over those words, but he knows that Ellen wouldn’t say something like that to him. If she really felt like that, she would have said it all much sooner.
Instead, the two were trying to find a way to be together. It was Glenna who gave Brian his strip of tartan back, making it clear that Ellen had kept it. Time and time again, Ellen’s actions have proven that she wants to be with Brian, so will he trust the words that she’s saying?
We could see in Ellen’s eyes that she didn’t really want to say what she was saying. As Brian’s anger dies down (and maybe once he’s out of this life-or-death situation), then he may be able to look at the situation more clearly and realize that Ellen didn’t mean anything she said.
