Roger ended up shocked to learn that he wasn’t in 1778 after all in Outlander season 7, episode 9. It led to some great moments for the character.

We ended Outlander season 7A with Roger and Buck going through the stones. They believed they were heading to 1778, believing that Rob had taken Jemmy through the stones for the gold that Jamie had hidden. Well, it turns out that they’re not in the right time period.

It took a trip to Lallybroch for Roger to figure out that he was in completely the wrong time. What does this mean for him and Buck? Well, a lot, but let’s look at Roger’s best moments from the episode first.

Wondering about being born

One thing I hated about Claire asking Jamie for a year before he went to kill Black Jack Randall was because Claire didn’t bring up why it was so important. Claire believed at the time that Randall was Frank’s direct ancestor, which meant without him, Frank wouldn’t be born. Without Frank being born, there would be a chance that Claire wouldn’t make it through the stones to Jamie. If Jamie had all of that laid out, maybe he would have understood Claire’s need for Frank being born all the better.

Well, Outlander corrected the wrong a little with Roger’s thoughts. As it looked like Buck was about to have a heart attack—and Roger clearly realized that something was wrong—he wondered what it meant for him. Would he even be born if something happened to Buck now?

He would since Buck’s wife has already had the child that will lead to Roger’s line, but it brings up the question of what happens when people die out of their own time. Buck brought it up, and Roger just brushed it off. He’s trying to keep it together on the surface, but his head is a whirlwind of thoughts. I love that we see how he is panicking but not showing it.

Meeting Brian Fraser at Lallybroch

Roger believed that he was in 1778 all the way up to knocking on the front door of Lallybroch. When he saw the man in front of him, he called him Mr. Murray. You see, Roger naturally believed that he would meet Ian Murray, or at least maybe Jamie Murray. Roger has no idea what Ian and the rest of the Murray clan look like!

Then Brian announced his own name. Having Roger’s internal thoughts told to us as a voice over was great. I couldn’t stop laughing as we heard everything that Roger was thinking. As soon as he heard the name Brian Fraser, he knew that this was Jamie’s dad. That meant something was wrong. He wasn’t in the time period he thought he was in.

Roger has to think things through quickly. If he came across Jenny and Ian, he could easily explain things since Jamie would have written to them about Roger and Bree. By meeting Brian decades earlier, Roger needs to make up a story about who he is and where he comes from.

Seeing Geillis Duncan in Cranesmuir

Outlander season 7, episode 9 brought a few familiar faces. One was Geillis. I think I love the fact that Roger didn’t really figure out where he was as he took Buck to Geillis’s home. He didn’t ask for a name, and maybe he didn’t realize which village he was in. It makes sense for him not to question too much about the person Jenny Fraser was sending him to.

As soon as the door opened, Roger knew who he was looking at. His expression and voiceover made this work so well. Roger is trying to hold it all together while he sees a woman who is known for killing her husbands. This is also the mother of Buck and his own direct ancestor, which is sure to complicate matters.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of this play out. After all, there’s a lot Roger knows about Geillis, and she should recognize him but may not have taken much in during 1968. Considering everything he knows, there are more reasons for Roger to remember her.
