We’ve over the halfway mark of Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1, and it’s brought us to a heartbreaking moment. Thanks to a lie, Henry has had a complete break from reality. Is there a chance that he’ll come back?

This whole episode was focused on Julia and Henry, although there was a bit of Brian’s story thrown in there. We also got more of a look at Davina’s backstory, which was perfectly timed with the arrival of Julia and Henry’s child.

It’s time to break down the episode with the top five moments. Remember that these aren’t necessarily favorite moments in terms of characters, but they’re designed to push arcs forward and delve more into who the characters are that we’re watching.

Henry thinking about how to find Julia in Outlander: Blood of My Blood

Up to this point, it wasn’t clear if Henry knew that Julia was pregnant or not. It almost seemed like she hadn’t had a chance to tell him this. Yet, at the start of Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 6, Henry tells Arch Bug that he needs to speak with midwives.

Yes, he knows Julia is pregnant, and he knows that the baby will be born any day now. Finally, Henry is thinking about another way to find his wife, rather than just hoping that someone will come to him with information.

Flashbacks of Davina Porter

We also get to know a little more about Davina’s relationship with Simon Fraser and how it started. There are a few comments about how Davina had issues with Simon’s late wife, and there’s almost a hint that Davina had somewhat seduced Simon. However, that wasn’t the case at all.

Davina was raped, her virginity stolen from her. It didn’t stop there. Due to being pregnant, Simon knew that he could keep doing it over and over again without consequence. Getting to see this past offers more of a look at who Davina is as a person and how she’s become somewhat of a victim of trauma and abuse. We need this for character development, and I prefer this way of telling the story, as there’s no way Davina would actually open up to Julia about this.

Julia continuing to protect her unborn child

As the women kept pushing Julia to repent and tell them the truth about the real father of her unborn child, Julia remained steadfast. She kept saying that it was Simon, something that many women in pain wouldn’t be able to do. They would eventually break, and it would lead to them slipping up.

Julia nearly did at one point, but the women believed she was naming her son Henry. This brought her back out of calling for her husband and put the focus back on remembering the story she has told to keep her son safe.

Arch’s discomfort in the lie in Outlander: Blood of My Blood

I hate that Henry was lied to. I’m in two minds about whether to hate the woman who told the lie for money, as I’ve got to remember the time period. I try not to look at situations with 21st century glasses. The one person to really hate is Arch Bug, but this scene also brings one of the top moments of Outlander: Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 6.

Arch is visibly uncomfortable by the lie that is being told. It’s clear that he knows how Henry is going to feel learning that his child has died. He also has an idea of what it’s like to almost lose his own wife, so he’ll know how Henry is feeling about that. Arch probably didn’t want to do this to Henry, but he had no choice, and he’s right to look uncomfortable.

Julia handing Brian the birthday cake

There’s a truce between Brian and Julia again. He gets to know the truth about the baby, and with this truth comes a sense of honor and empathy. Brian knows what his father is like, and now that he is learning a little more about what his mother went through, he can see that Julia just did what she needed to.

It leads to him sharing that he doesn’t know when his birthday is. It’s a day that has never been celebrated, so Julia changes that with a cake and a candle. There’s a chance to bring her custom to him, and he appears thankful for that kindness and care.
