With another episode wrapped up, we’re one step closer to the storyline of Outlander. However, there’s still plenty more to tell after Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 3.

Ellen MacKenzie has found a way to save her family, but she can’t get out of a marriage just yet. Little does she know, Simon Fraser is working on getting her out of that, but not in the best way possible. Meanwhile, Julia is figuring out how to survive while Henry continues to search for her in the past.

We take a look at the episode to see the best moments from the entire episode. This isn’t focused on the individual actions of the lead characters, but the story as a whole.

Ellen’s dreams of Brian in Blood of My Blood

It’s clear that Ellen and Brian are meant to be together. They are fated, so to speak, and we get to see that play out with Ellen’s dreams of Brian. She wants to be with him in a way she’s never wanted to be with any man.

It’s such a great moment, as it shows just how much she’s fallen for Brian in such a short time. She knows that she can’t be with him, though. She is a chess piece on a board, and there’s no escape from that.

Davina trying to protect Julia

Julia knows that she’s pregnant, and it’s clear that Davina knows as well. For the last month, Julia hasn’t had her period, and that means pregnancy. It’s the simplest reason, anyway, but Julia isn’t ready to admit that to anyone for her own protection.

I do think Davina is simply trying to protect Julia. She knows that Simon won’t let Julia leave, but he will harm the baby. It’s best for mother and child that Julia terminate the pregnancy on her own accord. And I have to wonder how many others have come to her for this help.

The Scottish rap battle in Blood of My Blood season 1, episode 3

Who would have thought that we’d get a rap battle in Blood of My Blood? Granted, it’s not exactly rap. Instead, the two men use poetry as a way to battle against each other, and we have a battle between the Jacobites and those loyal to King George I.

I just find it a great nod to today’s world. It’s clear that very little has changed in terms of the way people will go after each other in a respectful way. We also get to see the passion of the Jacobites, but also that there are plenty of people who don’t think James Stuart should sit on the throne.

Ned realizing Dougal and Colum are causing more problems

Ellen decides to speak with Ned Gowan, knowing that anything he does is for the good of the clan. There’s only so much that he can do to stop marriage contracts, but he can at least counsel everyone on what’s best for the family.

So, when we see him learn about Dougal also setting up a marriage for Ellen, it’s clear that he’s angry at the pair of the brothers. They are so busy going up against each other that they don’t even think about what it means for anyone else or the clan as a whole.

Flashbacks of Red Jacob in Blood of My Blood

I continue to enjoy the use of the flashbacks throughout Blood of My Blood, as it shows us events of the past. We get to see two important moments that connect back to the current situation.

We get to see what it was like for Colum after falling from his horse. We see the disappointment and shame that Jacob carries, but it’s not just for Colum. He’s also ashamed of Dougal for his actions on the night of the cattle raid. We can see why Ellen is working the way she is to get her brothers back on the same page.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood airs on Fridays on STARZ.
