We get a chance to see Jerry as a pilot in A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 6. A little more of his personality comes out in this as well.
However, it’s not all happy, as this is the point that his mission goes wrong. The plane goes down, and Jerry finds himself unsure of where he is going to land. There is also a name mentioned in this section that will stand out to many Outlander fans.
Breaking down A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows section 6
The section starts with Jerry on one of his training missions. We get to learn a little more about what he’s doing and where he’s going. This is also a chance to see some of his rituals, which includes touching the picture of Dolly in his jacket pocket. Jerry thinks about a stone that Dolly gave him, and we know that this is foreshadowing for things to come, as Jerry wouldn’t be able to get through portals safely without a stone.
As Jerry thinks about the mission that he’s on, he mentions the name Paul Rakoczy, which is an important one in the world of Outlander. This is the name of Le Comte St. Germain, who we last saw in The Space Between. Is it possible that this is the same man, or is it someone with the same name?
While Jerry goes on with the training mission, he thinks about how everything he has learned as a pilot is going out of the window. He needs to fly straight, and he’s not flying with a group for protection. And he really doesn’t like the feeling of the camera triggers, as they are lighter and clickier than his usual gun triggers. The cameras also malfunction now and then, and he ends up smashing the trigger to get it to work at one point, noting that he needs to get his anger under control before he goes home.
It doesn’t really matter what happens here, though. Jerry’s plane, which isn’t his usual plane, and he doesn’t like that either, suffers from engine problems. Oil splatters on the windshield, and the engine comes to a stop while he is 500ft in the air. He can’t see where he’s landing, but we know he’s somewhere around Hadrian’s Wall. Jerry is going to have to figure out how to belly land from the clouds.
Could this chapter be used in a TV adaptation?
If there every was an adaptation, I could see this chapter being used. It leads us up to Jerry getting to the stones that he will end up going through. However, the show would need to find a way to make this more accessible to people. After all, everything in this chapter is internalized.
If Rakoczy is the same man from the past, we’d also need that hint as well. One of the ways to do that is to show a few moments of him giving Jerry orders, and we could have flashbacks of Dolly giving Jerry the stone and the silk scarf. Otherwise, there’s going to be a lot of Jerry talking to himself.
