The end of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode 3 delivered a huge reveal. We found out Egg’s real identity.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode 3.

While Dunk has spent a lot of time focusing on becoming a knight, Egg has been in the background with his own story hidden. There have been hints to his real identity, but nobody has asked him outright, but that has changed.

As Dunk tried to protect Tanselle from Prince Aerion, he landed himself in a lot of trouble. It’s only because of Egg that Dunk didn’t end up dying. Just as Aerion was about to smash Dunk’s mouth into the stage — and if you’ve seen American History X, you know how that turns out! — Egg stood up and revealed his identity.

He is Prince Aegon, Aerion’s youngest brother.

Who is Prince Aegon in the Game of Thrones universe?

The downside of the name Aegon in the world of Game of Thrones is that it’s a popular one. There were five Aegon kings, and Jon Snow was supposed to be named Aegon as well. So, which one is Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

Well, he was mentioned on Game of Thrones. When Maester Aemon died, he called out to “Egg,” and this was the Egg that we’ve come to know on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Egg grows up to become King Aegon V. No, not the Mad King, although you'll be forgiven for that mistake due to the prophecy! However, he does die in fire, as has just been prophesied in this episode. He tries to hatch dragon eggs, wanting dragons to come back from the dead, and he dies in the process of that.

What does Egg’s identity mean on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

Egg revealing his identity was to help protect Dunk on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, Dunk punched a prince, and he has to pay for that. The benefit is that it’s not instant death. Instead, it leads to the trial by combat, which had been touched on during the second episode promo.

It’s because of Egg that this is made possible. Up to this point, Egg is believed to have gone missing on the way to the tourney. Well, he did, but he happened to find his own way to the tourney to become Dunk’s squire. At least Dunk took him in and protected him, and that has to stand for something. In fact, it will do in the future once Egg becomes king.

So, we know that Dunk is going to survive this trial by combat. Is that because Egg finds a way to bring it to an end? Is it because Dunk kills Aerion? Well, we need to watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to see how the show will develop that story. Egg certainly helped save his friend’s life, though.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs Sundays at 10/9c on HBO and HBO Max.
