Just weeks after the renewal, there’s even more exciting news about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2. This news shows signs that HBO is trying to keep the wait between seasons to a minimum.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 was renewed back in November, along with the renewal of House of the Dragon season 4. The renewal didn’t come as a massive shock considering the excitement fans of the Game of Thrones universe already have of this series, but it was welcome news to know that we could fully invest in the first season of the series.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 has started filming

So, what’s the exciting news? Only that just weeks after the announcement of season 2, filming has started (via Knowledge Online). It means that the writers knew there would be a second season, likely with HBO quietly renewing it to allow the pre-production work to start. Now filming has started in Belfast, marking the beginning in style.

The second season is slated to arrive in 2027. It’s worth remembering that the first season was supposed to arrive in late 2025, but it was pushed back to January 2026. With some hope, starting up production now will mean that the plan of a 2027 release will work.

After all, House of the Dragon season 3 is slated to arrive in summer 2026, and we’ll get the fourth season in 2028. HBO probably wanted a Game of Thrones show each year, and this is a chance to get that plan back in line.

Which book is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 based on?

While we don’t quite know how the six-episode first season will go, it’s likely that it will cover the first book in the tale of Dunk and Egg. That likely means we’ll see A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 adapt The Sworn Sword by George R.R. Martin. This was originally published in the Legends II anthology, but it has since been adapted into a graphic novel by Ben Avery and Mike S. Miller.

The novella follows Dunk now as the sworn sword to Ser Eustace when he learns that a damn has been built across the local stream. It leads to a new journey for the knight, who searches for a peaceful solution between to two embattled families. Just like in the first book, Dunk ends up facing a trial by combat, although there are some major differences, mainly in that this is a trial by combat we’ve already come to know in Game of Thrones.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on Sunday, Jan. 18 on HBO and HBO Max.
