If you thought it odd that Hal seemed to know Mr. Bloomer in the previous chapter, it all becomes clear in A Fugitive Green chapter 12. Minnie learns of Mr. Bloomer’s real identity.

It all starts with a letter, and it leads to Minnie getting a job offer. However, this offer is going to clash with another task that she has, and her spidey-senses are also tingling. Thankfully, she has someone she can turn to when it comes to airing out her thoughts.

Rafe joins her to the meeting, and he overhears everything. He is someone Minnie can trust, and I love seeing this friendship develop.

Breaking down A Fugitive Green chapter 12

We open with Minnie getting a note from Edward Twelvetrees. He would like to meet with her, and he has a job for her that would be well-suited to her talents. While she is uneasy about it, she decides to meet with him. However, Rafe O’Higgins is not letting her go alone. He’s become extremely protective of her.

It turns out that Rafe was right to go. Mr. Bloomer and Edward Twelvetrees are the same person, but Minnie is able to maintain her composure as she finds all this out. Now it makes sense why Edward wanted to get out of the glass house when Hal walked in, and it makes sense why Hal told Minnie not to trust her not-quite-a-friend.

Edward wants to get his hands on the letters that Esme and Nathanial wrote to each other, so it turns out that they are definitely true. He will even pay handsomely for them.

Minnie decides to leave the meeting and turns to Rafe about the matter, because he overheard it all. He’s sure that Edward is out for vengeance, and getting his hands on the letters could help with that. I think it’s also possible that Edward knows the letters contain information that will help clear Hal’s name, and Edward doesn’t want that to happen.

Could this chapter be used in a TV adaptation?

We would need to see this chapter if A Fugitive Green was adapted. The whole chapter brings more to Minnie’s story, as well as the story as a whole for Hal. Edward continues to plot to bring the Duke of Pardloe down, and it’s clear that he will stop at nothing.

This chapter also gives us another look at Minnie and her smarts. She is able to figure out that Twelvetrees is up to something, and she confides in Rafe about it all. Getting to see all this development is important in terms of us getting to know Minnie and getting to see the bond with Rafe forming, so there’s no doubt that the chapter would be needed in an adaptation.
