Here we are, with the start of the final novel in our Outlander Book Club. A Fugitive Green picks up in 1744 in Paris, and that does mean we get to see a certain Mr. Fraser.
A Fugitive Green chapter 1 introduces us to a young Minnie Rennie, who we will end up knowing as the Duke of Pardloe’s wife. However, how does a young French spy end up marrying one of the wealthiest men in England? That’s a story to tell.
Breaking down A Fugitive Green chapter 1
The chapter opens in Survival, Paris in April 1744. Minnie Reenie is just 17, and her whole family is in the business of espionage. Each member of the family has a secret of their own, including Minnie, who is on the hunt for her biological woman, who she knows as Mrs. Simpson.
She has a letter that has some information about her mother, but she has to hide it from the others around her. That’s when a cockroach from Madagascar called Frederick hisses at her from a shelf. This cockroach isn’t one for her to attempt to swat, though. It’s a gift that Jamie Fraser is going to collect, and when he comes into the rare book shop that her father, Andrew, runs in Paris, Minnie is disappointed to learn that Jamie is married.
Yes, that’s the disappointment many a woman in the world of Outlander has felt. I do have to wonder what this is all about when it comes to the main Outlander storyline, as we know Jamie and Claire are attempting to prevent the Battle of Culloden happening at this point in time.
After this, it’s time for Minnie to head out on a solo mission. Her father wants her to go to London, where she will get a new dress so that she is suitable enough to get background information on the Duke of Pardloe and two men called Sir Robert Abby and Henry Scundanore, along with a few others who aren’t as important as the three.
Could the chapter be used in an adaptation?
I would love to see an adaptation of A Fugitive Green because I do enjoy Minnie’s character. We’ve only come to know her as. Hal’s wife in the Outlander and Lord John Grey books, with a hint that she knew Jamie Fraser in the past. Now we get to find out why.
So, if A Fugitive Green was ever adapted, we would need to see this chapter used. After all, it introduces us to Minnie and her family, giving us an idea of the background that she comes from. There are elements of drama set up, especially with her need to find her biological mother, or at least something about her.
It would also be great for Outlander fans, as we get to see Jamie Fraser again. It’s funny how particular lives keep connecting.
