In true Outlander style, the premiere dramatically opened a Pandora’s box of storylines. Watching this opening episode, one thing is for sure: after 8 years of devotion, the ending will be more bitter than sweet.

The newest theme song barely finishes before the episode dives straight into the action. In the opening scene, Claire and Jamie are undercover in Savannah preparing for a “business meeting” with a smuggler. They are on a mission to uncover the truth about their daughter, Faith, whom the whole world believed died at birth.

The man they’re talking to is the same person responsible for Faith’s death. Overcome with rage, Claire stabs him to death. The scene sets a precedent: Claire, who has sworn to do no harm to another human being, has just killed someone. The emotional weight of the first few minutes seems to fade to make way for tender scenes featuring our beloved Frasers and their growing family.

1. Claire and Jamie being amazing grandparents

In the aftermath of Claire’s first murder, our spirits are quickly lifted with the entrance of Marsali, Fergus, and their children. While they couldn’t be parents to Faith, they can now be grandparents to several kids. Granny Claire prepares cookies for breakfast, and the happy family eats them around the kitchen table. Grand-da Jamie jokes with the kids, bouncing little Henri-Christian on his knee. It’s a warm domestic moment that reminds us why the Fraser family dynamic is so beloved.

2. Fergus and Jamie having a father-son moment in the print shop

In true son-of-Jamie style, Fergus has opened a print shop – with a little sedition on the side. It’s a secret that Jamie learns as soon as he starts looking around. At first he acts preoccupied and warns Fergus of the danger he poses to his family but quickly accepts the circumstances.

After all, Jamie knows he can’t judge: as Fergus says, he’s doing everything Jamie taught him, referring to their time working as smugglers in Edinburgh. Fergus has come a long way from the little French kid we met in season 2. His wisdom is best summarized by Fergus himself: “La plume est mon épée”—"The pen is my sword.”

3. Ian presenting the Frasers with a newly built house

After their time in Savannah, Jamie and Claire (and their secret granddaughter Fanny) are homebound. As soon as they arrive at Fraser’s Ridge, they are greeted by Young Ian, Jamie’s nephew, who surprises them with a brand new house after their own burned down.

As he shows them around the house, he points out all the details he’s recreated from their old home – the surgery table, built from memory; a big kitchen for their ever-growing family; and even south-facing windows for direct sunlight. Young Ian has once again stolen our hearts with his thoughtfulness.

4. Claire and Jamie reminisce on Faith

In their new bedroom, Jamie finds Claire gazing out the window, bathed in moonlight. This brings back memories. Jamie reminisces on the night he thinks they conceived Faith, when Claire told him she loved him for the first time, at Lallybroch. When Claire questions how he could know that, Jamie replies simply that he knew a part of himself would live inside her forever because he was giving her a child. It’s a tender scene that reconnects them to their lost daughter.

5. The Mackenzie-Fraser reunion

The Mackenzies are back! Brianna, Roger, and their kids, Jemmy and Mandy, travel back in time to Fraser’s Ridge, adding to the episode a touching reunion with Claire and Jamie.

They bring several books with them: a children’s book that Jamie gets to read to Jem and Mandy (while Claire watches adoringly), the Merck Manual to help Claire catch up on ‘80s medicine, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which Roger promises Jamie will thoroughly enjoy. But most importantly, Brianna brings back Frank Randall’s last published research: the book Soul of a Rebel, which finally explains the episode’s title.

6. Claire meeting her namesake

Another reunion we loved is the one between Claire, Jamie, and Lizzie, Brianna’s friend and servant she brought with her from Scotland in season 4. In the scene, we meet Lizzie’s daughter, named Claire after our protagonist. This is the first time a child has been named after her, and we say, "It's been a long time coming!"

7. Lord John holding a screaming baby

In Savannah, we also see Lord John and William Ransom discussing his newfound parentage. Haunted by the revelation that he is actually Jamie’s son, William is trying to drown his sorrows with alcohol. He confesses to John that he doesn’t know who he is anymore.

But the whole scene is made almost comically funny by an absurd sight: Lord John is holding a teething baby while he’s reprimanding his adoptive son and assuring a redcoat soldier he is not a traitor. Talk about multitasking… Lord John can do it all!

8. Jamie reading through Lord of the Rings

And finally, you can’t help but smile warmly at Jamie opening the Lord of the Rings book and skeptically saying out loud, "Frodo Baggins? Ah, a Welshman.”

It is clear the showrunners are adding all the right ingredients to make this a memorable last season. In the next episodes, we hope to see some other tender moments between the Frasers – and why not? Also between Brianna and her brother William. We will surely tune in this Friday to find out which are going to be our next 8 favorite moments from season 8, episode 2.
