Andrew Gower landed a series regular role in MGM+’s The Winter King. Who does the Outlander actor play in the Arthurian series?
When it comes to Outlander actors, Andrew Gower pops up in a lot of shows. We see him a lot in historical fiction shows, so it wasn’t surprising to see him in the one based on Arthurian legend. Yes, The Winter King is a retelling of the Arthur storyline.
The show itself is based on a book series by Bernard Cornwell. That story does take some liberties with history, but we have to remember that Arthur is more of a legend than fact. We just know someone was responsible for getting England back on track of being one country so long ago.
Who is Andrew Gower in The Winter King?
As you go through the series, you’ll recognize a few of the actors. Andrew Gower is the one that stands out for many Outlander fans. Who does he play on the series? Is he finally going to be a character we can root for?
Gower plays Sansum. While in the books, we are immediately introduced to Sansum as a bishop, in the flashbacks of the story and in the TV series, we see him much younger. He’s a Catholic priest, who is described as being unsympathetic but intriguing. That’s definitely been the case for Sansum so far in the series.
In the book series, we learn early on that Sansum can’t read. That does seem strange for a bishop, but it means that our main protagonist, Derfel, is able to write the story of the Arthur he knew.
We are only three episodes into The Winter King so far. This is one of those historical fiction shows that you’ll want to check out, even if it is just to see who Gower plays next.
