When the titles for Outlander Season 7 were released, we all wondered why an episode was titled “Singapore.” Was this a hint that Mr. Willoughby was coming back? Those who had read the books knew this would mean a huge change the storyline, and that’s not the way things worked out.
Even if you’ve watched the episode, you may have missed the reasoning behind the title. It came from a conversation between Claire and Jamie.
Claire thinks of World War II in Outlander Season 7, Episode 5
Jamie tells Claire about something he’s realized could happen but that those in charge aren’t paying attention to. The British could attack from the water.
Well, Claire notes that this is the opposite of how the British lost Singapore during World War II. The British believed that Japan would attack from the water and not the jungle around them, so they didn’t mount much of a defense there. The Japanese surprised everyone by coming through the jungle.
It doesn’t have much weight on the episode as a whole. However, this is a story that helps Jamie figure out a way to prove that an attack from the water is possible. It shows how Jamie listens to everything that Claire tells him. He doesn’t always understand it all, but he can see the meaning behind it. When Claire says that it’s a shame people can’t be shown what could happen, Jamie realizes that’s exactly what he needs to do.
Of course, those in charge still don’t listen. The British go through with the plan that Jamie realized could happen. “Singapore” happens as a way to take Fort Ticonderoga.
