At the beginning of Grantchester Season 4, a new vicar rode into town. Tom Brittney is Will Davenport in the series, but not for very much longer.
Grantchester Season 8 has only just started on PBS, but we already know that this is likely to be Tom Brittney’s last. There is a chance that he’ll be in at least the first episode of Season 9, but that’s not confirmed just yet.
Brittney has chosen to leave the series. This is his choice by the sounds of things. He is ready to move onto a new role after spending the last five years playing Will Davenport. Rishi Nair will take over as a new vicar in town, according to TVLine.
When will Tom Brittney leave Grantchester?
Brittney is well-known to Outlander fans. He played Lieutenant Jeremy Foster in the first season, who saw how Angus treated Claire and believed Claire to be a prisoner. He managed to get Claire to Fort William so Claire could return “home,” but all that was stopped thanks to Black Jack Randall turning up.
He then appeared in the second season. He was injured at Prestonpans and asked Dougal for help. Dougal killed him.
Will we see Will Davenport meet a grisly end, too? Hopefully, the series is working on a story to have Will ride off into the sunset somewhere. It’s not unusual for vicars to take on roles in another part of the country, and that is the way Will’s counterpart Sidney Chambers, played by James Norton, was written out.
Sidney was in the first two episodes of Season 4 before Will took over permanently. We could see Will turn up for one or two episodes of Season 9 before Nair’s Alphy Kotteram takes over.
Grantchester airs on Sundays on PBS. Catch up on the series on PBS Masterpiece.
