The Frasers were surprised to learn that Tom Christie was still in Wilmington in Outlander Season 7, Episode 4. How was that possible?

Caution: This post contains major spoilers from Outlander Season 7, Episode 4.

Outlander is full of surprises. During Season 7, Episode 4, we learned that a character we thought was dead was actually still alive. Well, there is truth in the line “if you don’t see the death happen on-screen then it didn’t happen.”

Tom Christie was in Wilmington when Claire and Jamie returned. Everyone was shocked to see each other. After all, Tom had heard about the fire at the Big House and assumed the worst. He was the one who put the obituary in the paper. Thanks, Tom!

How did Tom escape hanging in Outlander Season 7, Episode 4?

The last we saw of Tom, he had confessed to murder. He was on the ship with Governor Martin as Claire was returned to Jamie. Everyone was sure that Tom would be executed for murder.

That wasn’t the case, though. Governor Martin found out that Tom could read and write. Like with Claire, who was spared for a short time because of her healing skills and usefulness to his wife, Martin was willing to spare Tom temporarily for his needs. Martin needed a secretary, and that’s what Tom became.

By the time a real secretary was available, Martin’s control over North Carolina had waned so much that Tom was able to get away as a free man. He is no longer a convicted criminal. It’s not like he actually killed Malva, anyway. We found out that Allan did that!

What will Tom do now? Well, it doesn’t seem like he’s heading back to the Ridge. It looks like his storyline is over. Everything that has happened to him has made him rethink his life and his authority over people.
