Outlander Book Club: Written in My Own Heart’s Blood Chapter 88 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter starts with John and Hal turning up in civilian clothes. John and Claire initially examine each other, and it’s clear that Jamie is uncomfortable with all this going on. John makes a quip to Jamie, but Claire gets the two men to agree to be nice. They need to find out why John and Hal are here.
John and Hal want Jamie’s help to get to General Arnold. They need to talk to him about Richardson and to find William. It turns out that William has gone off in search of two women (we know they are Jane and Fanny) and John worries that Richardson has led William into another trap. Jamie doesn’t think that William will end up in another trap.
This brings up Ian, as Jamie has to explain that he found out about the Dismal Swamp incident from Ian. John shares what he knows, and Jamie feels at ease. Ian’s father will be with him and Rachel will find him.
Back to William. Hal comes in and shares what he knows about Richardson, too. Everyone has concerns about this man, but Jamie makes it clear that he knows William won’t fall for more tricks. He raised him for six years and John has raised him since. It’s clear that Jamie still believes that John was a good man for William.
Claire is worried about William being AWOL. Hal points out that William has been relieved of duty so that’s not a problem. John didn’t know about this fact.
Jamie agrees to helping John and Hal get to see General Arnold. However, Jamie refuses to use John’s house for Claire’s recovery. He will protect his family himself.
