Outlander Book Club: Written in My Own Heart’s Blood Chapter 68 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter starts with a new day. We begin with Ian, who decides to go back over the lands that he scouted the previous day. He loves the walk through the forest on his own, reminding him of what he would do when he and Emily were facing troubles. I love that we see him remember things with Emily with a little more positivity and serenity.
I also love that we see Ian connected to nature. There is so much that he learned from the Mohawk, and he’s taking that with him into this battle.
He does reach out for Rollo at one point. Rollo isn’t there, though. He has stayed behind with Rachel to recover from the wounds he received while out scouting the previous day.
We then jump to William, who is preparing not to go into battle. He receives orders from Gen. Clinton to remain behind with the clerical staff today. This isn’t what he wants to do, so when Capt. Andrew comes to him asking him to run a dispatch to Co. Tarleton, he jumps on it. He decides to fold the note from Clinton and place it back on his bed, so it looks like he didn’t see it before Andre’s orders.
Of course, Clinton’s orders would go before Andre’s as he is a higher rank. While William would usually respect the chain of command, he feels a little left out. We see him willing to bend the rules just to feel like he’s doing something. I don’t really blame him for this.
