Droughtlander suggestions: Check out Walker Independence on The CW
If you’re looking for a show set in America’s past during Droughtlander, Walker Independence on The CW is the place to turn.
Walker Independence is the spin-off prequel of Walker, which was a recent reboot of Walker, Texas Ranger. The good news is you don’t need to watch the OG series or the main reboot to understand the events of the prequel spin-off. There are some Easter eggs thrown in for fun, though.
The series is set in the late 1800s in America. This is later than Outlander, but it touches on some of the problems that were seen once the Revolutionary War ended. If you’re curious about how the Wild West changes, this is the show to check out.
What is Walker Independence about?
The series follows Abby Walker, a woman from Boston who moves to Independence, Texas. She’s traveling with her husband, who is murdered on the journey. Abby makes it her mission to get justice for her late husband and figure out who killed him.
Along the way, she meets a few people who may be able to help. one of those is Hoyt Rawlins, who is a loveable rogue who just wants to get ahead in the world in all the wrong ways. She also meets Calian, a member of a local Native American tribe who has his own problems to deal with thanks to the plans to build a railroad.
Of course, there’s the new sheriff in town. This man has taken the job that was supposed to be Abby’s husband’s. Is he the one who killed Liam?
Why watch Walker Independence during Droughtlander
I will admit that this isn’t quite Outlander in terms of costumes, music, setting, and writing. However, it’s a fun series to watch while we wait for Outlander to return. There are only 10 episodes out right now, and there are just three more to air. So far, The CW hasn’t renewed it for a second season.
This is certainly something to watch if you’re interested in Native American culture. It doesn’t quite get the focus it should, but I love the way Abby gets a name from the tribe, and I adore seeing Abby fight for Calian’s rights.
We get this view of how white people reacted to people of different colors. Not only is there Calian’s tribe, but there’s a Chineseman working in the town. Kai is sweet, but he has a secret that he doesn’t want to come out. Of course, he’s separated from the town due to the color of his skin, but he has a lot of insight for Abby and others.
Kate is another character to watch for. She’s a smart woman who isn’t there for all the same reasons as everyone else. Just what does she want?
One of the great things about this show is the slow development of all these storylines. We see friendships form and break as the murder mystery unravels.
Walker Independence is available to stream on The CW App.
