Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There is certainly some foreshadowing in this chapter. Ian sharing that it could have just been a compatibility issue with Emily is going to come up again. It foreshadows that Ian and Rachel will have a child together.

I think we also get foreshadowing that Emily will come back. Rachel is clearly worried about Ian’s feelings for Emily. While Ian loved her, he has moved on. He gained some closure in the previous book, and that is important now. Plus, the love he feels for Rachel is different to the love he felt for Emily, and I think we get a sense of that in the rest of Ian and Rachel’s storyline.

Of course, there’s the clear foreshadowing (or maybe plot development?) that Ian will learn that Jenny is alive. Jenny will get to meet Rachel, and yes, Jenny does like her.

Adapting the Written in My Own Heart’s Blood chapter

I hope to see this chapter used in the TV series, and I think we will see it. We need to see Ian grieve his mother, even if it turns out that she isn’t dead. It’s important to have this character development for both Ian and Rachel. We also need to see their relationship develop.

I could see a lot of Ian and Rachel’s moments condensed, though. There isn’t going to be a lot of time to build their relationship, but whatever we get will be important to feel the two belong to each other.
