Each of the Outlander books after the first one can have its title abbreviated. Written in My Own Heart’s Blood is known as MOBY, but why?

Okay, so it’s actually the first and third books that aren’t abbreviated. You can’t really abbreviate Outlander or Voyager. All the others are shortened down, usually by initials.

Dragonfly in Amber is “DIA,” Drums of Autumn is “DOA,” The Fiery Cross is “TFC,” and A Breath of Snow and Ashes is “ABOSAA.” An Echo in the Bone starts the trend of not using the initials of the title. It’s known as Echo, and it’s pretty clear why that is the case. Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone is also abbreviated with just one of the words: Bees.

Written in My Own Heart’s Blood isn’t abbreviated using one of the words in the title. Its abbreviation is “MOBY.” That doesn’t appear anywhere in the title, so what’s the reasoning behind it?

Explaining the Written in My Own Hearts Blood abbreviation

Diana Gabaldon has explained this. It all comes from the way the book can be abbreviated. There is a process.

It could be shortened to My Own Heart’s Blood, which is then shortened to “MOHB.” When you look at those letters, you may want to turn them into a word. That word is “MOH-B.” And so, “MOBY” becomes the abbreviation.

The eight book goes through a lot of time lines. We see Roger in the 1730s, while Claire and Jamie are still in the 1770s. Bree is still in the 1980s for much of it, but the whole family ends up being reunited. It’s not even just these four being reunited. We get to see Jenny gain some freedom in America and live her life with Jamie and Claire. There’s a chance to see her reconnect with Young Ian.

Then there’s the whole William storyline. He needs to figure out who he is, and that takes him on one hell of a journey.
